Challenge:
Epipole were planning to develop epiCam® a unique low cost and portable camera for imaging the retina at high resolution, allowing early diagnosis and monitoring of diseases such as diabetic retinopathy. The company required Seed investment and grant support for the initial proof of concept for the innovative disruptive product. And also required funding at a later stage to target India and other developing countries to complete the product development and go to market.
Solution:
Kevin Lonergan made several introductions to Scottish Business Angel syndicates and also supported the company with the preparation of their robust SMART feasibility grant application. Justin supported and advised the company to apply for and to lead the application process for Scottish Edge (Round 7) Grant and Loan funding in 2015. With a significant R&D and International market development plan for the prototype digital retinal camera epiCam® the company applied for and received funding in the inaugural ‘Higgs Edge’ award category.
Results:
Epipole secured seed equity investment of £55k to match their SMART grant of £100k and £400k series A investment from Lancaster Capital in 2014. Also, by creating a professional pitch video, using contacts at the Glasgow School of Art Digital Design Studio, and navigating various rounds of pitches, the company were eventually awarded the top prize of £150,000 for Higgs Edge in December 2015, the highest amount awarded by Scottish Edge that year. This enabled the company to complete the development and roll out of the first commercial product while developing & launching versions 2 & 3 in 201
