NTL Limited
1st International Office Set-Up for UK Emerging Technology Enterprise
Company:
NTL Limited (acquired by Arqiva Limited)
NTL was formed in 1991 from being the Independent Broadcasting Authority responsible for all independent television and radio terrestrial broadcasting. R&D team developed a MPEG-2 DVB digital technology / software to broadcast television channels over global satellite systems for the evolving Pay-TV market driven by BSkyB in the UK and firms such as DirectTV & DishTV in the USA. Digi-Media Vision Limited was set-up to specifically target the global digital Pay-TV market. This was then acquired by NDS Broadcast Limited (a News Corporation business).
Location:
Denver, Colorado, USA
Lead Advisor:
Andrew McGee
Sector:
Digital Satellite Broadcast Technology
Challenge:
Build and grow business in the Americas digital broadcast Pay-TV markets inc. Canada, North America, Mexico and South America
Solution:
Strategic business development, strategic alliance partner and direct sales.
Results:
Took business from zero to US$25m in the space of 2 years in the most challenging commercial market in the world. After traveling back and forward each month to the USA, Andrew presented a robust justification to the NTL Board to open its 1st overseas office; which was in Denver, Colorado, USA. This involved locating the office and setting-up the business in its entirety involving legal and financial presence. This was a virgin territory for NTL and the business had never exported in its lifetime. First step was to identify all the leading contenders in the satellite, cable & terrestrial TV markets in the Americas by attending conventions in the USA and building a network of contacts and relationships with key decision makers. After moving to Denver, Colorado to be up close and personal with the US market; a joint venture was formed with Pace Microtechnology who provided set top boxes to BskyB; they shared the office which was set-up. Both the Pace representative and Andrew regularly presented an integrated solution to broadcasters working closely with the leading conditional access software providers such as NDS, Irdeto and Nagra Vision. The first major contract won was awarded by PanAmSat for a 32 channel MPEG-2 DVB Digital Satellite service being broadcast to Latin America from a satellite uplinking facility in Miami, Florida and was valued at US$8m.
